The Chagga tribe is one of more than 133 tribes of Tanzania, located under the slopes of
Mountain Kilimanjaro in the Region of Kilimanjaro - Northern of Tanzania. The word
Chagga originated from word kichaka (bush). This is because people of this place were
living at the bushes. The Chagga tribe is based on the solid foundations of their customs
and traditions and that is what identifies the tribe. The Chagga tribble is rich in their
customs and traditions which are playing a big role on cultural heritage.
This concept paper builds on strong foundation on the need to preserve cultural heritage
of Tanzania constituted by diverse tribes and dialects but unified by one language –
Kiswahili. The cultural heritage is the legacy of physical artifacts and intangible
attributes of a group or society that are inherited from past generations, maintained in the
present and bestowed for the benefit of future generations. Generally, the cultural
heritage of Indigenous Chagga peoples is considered in two ways, with each strongly
interconnected to each other, and to country, both broadly or specific to a locality or
place.
